From May 8-May 13, 2004, the Network of Culture and Media presents its first
international residency featuring poet and free speech activist
Goenawan Mohamad of Indonesia and playwright and journalist
Shahid Nadeem of Pakistan.
Three events will be held at three locations around Los Angeles from
Saturday May 8th through Wednesday May 13th, 2004.
All events are free and open to the public.

Art and Ideas from Indonesia and Pakistan
An outdoor festival of plays, poetry, live music, discussions, film screening, and more
The day includes the English version premiere of Shahid Nadeem’s latest play 'Bulha', about the great Sufi spiritual leader whose irreverent philosophy gets him into trouble with the powers-that-be, and Goenawan Mohamad’s poetic epic 'The King’s Witch', which turns a classic Indonesian fable inside out.

The Role of Democracy in South and Southeast Asia
A distinguished panel considers the meaning of democracy and the future of self-rule.
Mr. Nadeem and Mr. Mohamad will be joined by noted authors Dr. Jack Miles (God, A Biography),
Dr. Mehran Kamrava (Democracy in the Balance), Dr. Nikki Keddie (Modern Iran) and Dr. Karen Leonard
(Muslims in the U.S.). Amir Hussain of the CSUN Religious Studies Department will moderate.

A public discussion with Goenawan Mohamad and
Shahid Nadeem, moderated by Steven
Leigh Morris, theater editor of the LA Weekly. Mr. Mohamad and Mr. Nadeem will share their experiences
as working artists, social commentators and journalists both in and outside their home countries.
